When in doubt, check the route

Jessica’s photography business is definitely taking us to new places, and giving us unforgettable experiences. After a week of sick kiddos, sick selves and little sleep, we found ourselves stuck on a mountain road, our route impeded by a drift of snow, 2.5 miles from the trailhead. Fortunately, Jessica likes to arrive early and we needed all that time to meet her couple at the trailhead.

We picked up the pace and were able to meet her couple at the trailhead on time. The rest of the hike up to the top of the mountain was uneventful and the shoot went spectacularly. It truly was a picture perfect evening. Outdoor portraits are best shot at sunrise or sunset, and this was a gorgeous sunset.

We bid the couple adieu, heading back to the car as the sun retreated to the other side of the world. Though the additional distance was unexpected, we prepared for a journey in the dark. As we hit the trailhead, the sun had fully departed. We pulled out some snacks and set in for another bit of a walk. The air was still warm, wind still and nature abuzz around us as we strolled, flashlights guiding the way.

We finally made it to the snow drift as the night air was crisp and our feet were ready to put the 10.5 miles behind us. While five of those miles were not intended, we enjoyed the time together. As most parents know, time together to speak deeply into each others lives is precious. We used to run together, miles and miles, and much of that time was spent checking in, catching up, airing our frustrations (mostly with the world) and growing closer together. I look forward to more unexpected adventures, even those that add on miles.
