We had one more castle on our pass, and that was Urquhart Castle on the shore of Loch Ness. The first two castles were restoration projects, time capsules of an era long gone. This castle was nothing like that, it was in ruins, left to show the effect of time on its battered walls. The tour began with a short film showcasing the history of the Highland castle, with the ending triggering the powered curtains to reveal the castle just outside.
The grounds were lush and green. The weather-checked stone structures poked out of the landscape. We toured the castle and climbed the remnants of towers, reading the placards telling of life in the castle. It was a short tour, but probably the most unique we went on.
After Urquhart, we drove into Inverness and walked around the city and then for a long walk along the River Ness. We came across a rather entertaining park. It had a fitness section among many other play areas, of course we tried out the equipment. We wrapped up our walk as the sun set and then drove back to Grantown for one last night.
